How to Create and Manage a Discord Server

Discord servers are spaces in Discord that can be created by anyone. Some small servers are private, whereas some of the large ones are public. Any discord user can start a server and invite their friends to join it. They can have private as well as public conversations.

Discord is a widely used chatting app where a user above the age of 13 can share text, video, and voice. 500 million people are registered on Discord and mostly it is used for several work-based and support communities. I have seen my developer and artist friends using it. Home to a varied-sized community, at any time it has at least thousands of active users. Some of the larger open communities are mostly about famous games such as Minecraft, Fortnite, etc.

How to Join Discord

One of the best parts of Discord Servers is that you can use them while gaming to communicate with other players. Most of the platforms that offer this feature are tied to specific hardware. This is not the case with Discord due to its platform being agnostic. Players can integrate discord servers with PlayStation and even an Xbox account.

Joining Discord is as easy as joining any chat-based app. You just need to download this free app, which is available on Android, IOS, Linux, Windows, and MacOS. Now that you are inside the Discord app, you can join the Discord server by either directly searching the server name or accepting the invite. You can even start a server. A Discord server is a combination of various channels that the members use for conversations. Additionally, the video chat feature helps conduct meetings like Zoom meetings.

Discord has a very simple UI/UX where on the left rail appears servers and channels while on the right appears members. Moreover, there is an option on the top or the bottom of the mobile app where you can add or send messages to friends, you can even search servers and see when you are mentioned in a conversation.

Discord Subscription

Though Discord is a free platform it allows free users to join only up to 100 servers. It has paid plans that allow subscribers to join up to 200 discord servers. However, for an individual 100 servers is enough while if you are an extrovert or work on multiple projects you can go for the paid plan.

The limitation is not only in terms of individual joining servers. Another factor is that one server can contain up to 500,000 members. Moreover, if your account is new, there will be a limitation to maximum members up to 250,000. Additionally, one server can only have up to 50 categories and 500 channels.

Discord Glossary

One of the interesting parts of Discord is that it has its own vocabulary. If you are surrounded by Discord users, you must have heard terms like nitro, student hub, GDMs, etc. Let’s look at each one and what they mean.

As of now, you are well aware of the Discord server channels, let’s look at some of the specific ones:

DMs and GDMs:

We all know what DM is. It stands for Direct Message which may contain text, video calling, or even voice calling. While GDM is something new for non-discord users. It stands for Group Direct Messages. The GDM can be executed for up to 10 people only. However, these group DMs are not public and they need an invitation by a group member to join.

Go Live:

Discords allow people to share screens with other people on the server and DM. Go Live simply means sharing the screen.

Nitro:

Nitro is the premium subscription service offered by Discord. Subscribers enjoy various benefits, including the ability to personalize their Discord Tag, use custom emotes across all servers, increased file upload limits, and discounts on Server Boosts.

Server Boosts:

If your teen is passionate about a community, they may want to boost its server (or their own). Similar to Nitro, Server Boosts provide servers with additional benefits, such as more custom emotes, improved video and voice quality, and the option to create a custom invite link. Server Boosts can be purchased either through Nitro or separately.

Student Hubs:

Discord Hubs for Students enable students to verify their accounts using their official student email, granting access to an exclusive hub for their school. In this hub, they can connect with other verified students, find servers for study groups or classes, and share their own servers with peers. Hubs are not managed by schools or staff. While the servers within a Hub are run by students, they may include non-students as well. For more details about Student Hubs, please refer to our Student Hubs FAQs.

The Bottom Line:

Discord servers are really useful. While there is a public perception that it is only for gamers, it is for everyone. It can benefit anyone. Discord offers a place where people can collaborate and effectively communicate with their friends, project managers, and actually anyone.
